Typical scenario

A signature in a narrow form field differs from usual samples

If a disputed signature occupies a narrow field, its size and ending may differ from signatures on blank paper. That alone does not explain its origin. The original and suitable samples are needed to assess ordinary variation and space constraints.

What needs to be clarified

Compare the disputed signature with verified samples, assess consistent movement features and test whether the narrow field could explain observed differences.

Materials to prepare

  • Original form with disputed signature and intact margins
  • Naturally occurring signatures from a similar period on different documents
  • Requested samples in comparable fields with a collection record

What to compare

Assess the quantity and quality of features. Compare element structure, connections, movement sequence, proportions and placement against field boundaries. Examine variation in verified samples and consistency of similarities and differences, including shortening of the flourish near an edge.

Possible outcome of the analysis

A reasoned writer assessment or an inconclusive opinion may include feature illustrations, discussion of space constraints and additional materials needed.

Limits of the conclusions

Small size does not prove imitation. A short, simplified signature may be uninformative; its shape cannot establish a diagnosis, personality or signing circumstances.
